This week, meet VMware’s Vice President of America’s Marketing Anna Dorcey. Anna, who is based in Boston, leads all marketing personnel and field marketing initiatives within the Americas, inclusive of Latin America and Canada. She’s recently been recognized as one of CRN’s (Computer Retail News) Women of the Channel 2018: This list highlighted 30 women executives at solution provider organizations whose insight and influence in their respective companies help drive channel success.

VMware Careers: Anna, can you share how you’ve arrived at this point in your career?
Anna: I got to where I am today by leaving behind the fear of taking risks. I work hard every day to build relationships that help my team and VMware as a whole succeed. I have been able to accomplish so much mainly because of all the great people that I have worked with along the way. A leader is nothing without a strong team, and I’m lucky to manage such a motivated group of marketers.
VMware Careers: How did you get into tech, in particular the Marketing function?
Anna: I fell into tech by accident. I started out answering phone calls as a temp at Oracle, filling the role of “someone with a pleasant voice who can type accurately and fast.” It was for a sales office, and pre-cell phones or the internet, so I learned the right way to talk to customers and I ensured connections were made early on in my career. That first role at Oracle taught me a lot!
VMware Careers: Tell us about the type of people you are looking to have join your team.
Anna: I look for people who are smarter than me, and who will work with integrity. I like people that have perspective and show a real passion for what they do and how they can bring value to their work and the work of their wider teams.
VMware Careers: If you could offer one piece of career advice what would it be?
Anna: Believe in yourself and the abilities that you bring to the job. Always focus on your strengths, set proper expectations, and deliver with confidence.
VMware Careers: What excites you most about working at VMware?
Anna: VMware lets us marketers try new things. We have a key principle: “Innovate in Everything.” This principle is enshrined in all that we do, and it helps us to deliver the very best experiences for our customers and partners. We are quite fortunate to have a diverse group of people that come together every day with the freedom to innovate – a marketer’s dream!
