With over 50+ locations throughout the world, VMware is truly a global community made of passionate employees who thrive on collaborating together to bring IT industry-changing innovations to life. Each site also carries its own uniqueness, which is why we are highlighting office stories through our VMware Office Spotlight series. Get a flavor for what the VMware Frimley office in the UK is like today!
The main VMware United Kingdom (UK) office is located in Frimley, a small town in the county of Surrey. To get your bearings of where that is in the UK; London is just an hour away, the historic town of Windsor is less than 30 minutes away, as is LegoLand and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Jonny Wilkinson OBE (English Rugby Legend) was born here and Daphne de Maurier wrote ‘Jamaica Inn’ in Frimley, whilst her husband was based here.
Camberley is just a few minutes up the road; a town which boasts the famous concrete pipe white elephant (The elephant was created as advertising by a pipe company which rented the premises but when they closed down, the upkeep of the elephant was written into the tenancy contract, so subsequent businesses have continued to look after it.).
The Frimley Team
The Frimley office has grown organically as a place where everyone has the opportunity to fulfill their potential and help transform the way people work, every day. There are around 300 employees from all major disciplines; Field Marketing, Sales, HR, Finance, Legal, Facilities, Professional Services and a handful of R&D employees. As the VMware European headquarters for the Field organization, the office population is made up of people from dynamic backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. Our senior leadership team is committed to driving equal opportunity and fostering a culture and environment where great people want to work and thrive long term.
The Senior Vice President and General Manager of VMware Europe, Middle Eastern, Africa (EMEA), Maurizio Carli, is based at this office along with many of his Senior Management team. Many of the EMEA-wide events have originated from this office, such as the End-User Computing product launch in May 2012, which was broadcast via webcast from Frimley to all EMEA offices where local celebrations were held.
What makes Frimley unique
The Frimley office boasts the most obscured views of the Farnborough International Airshow held at the Farnborough Aerodrome in Hampshire every two years. The air show has spectacular displays of planes such as the Lancaster, Spitfire, Vulcan, Typhoon and the Red Arrows display team. This year there was even a sneak preview of the future of space travel with a full scale replica of Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShip Two on display at the show.
Here is what several of our Frimley employees have to say:
“Having worked for a much larger company prior to joining VMware, our centralized staff at Frimley has its advantages. Firstly, so many people are easily accessible across the organizational functions, which means that things can get done faster. This helps to create a strong sense of community. Another key benefit is the very supportive nature of the team at Frimley. Employees only have to ask to get the support or assistance needed to get a job done. The VMware UK cricket team, one of many social activities based out of Frimley has also provided a great way to socialise with people across the organisation as well as strengthening relationships with customers and partners.” –John, SMB EMEA
“I love the fact that we work with an increasingly international workforce at Frimley – particularly within the EMEA Marketing team. It is certainly helping me to brush up my language skills! I am also honoured to work with people who really do operate as a true team and enjoy each other’s company – everyone works really hard, but still finds time to help others.” –Diane, Channel Marketing, EMEA
“For me, the layout and services offered to facilitate an energised and friendly working environment is what makes our office unique. I always like to stop by and see the various departments, Marketing, HR, Education to learn what other parts of the business are up to in order to be reminded of the bigger picture, and what makes VMware distinctive in the marketplace. Frimley is a great office, with a great team who has a focus to win and support our company to be the best.” –Jason, Consultant, UK
The year ahead
This year continues to bring fresh new talent to Frimley as the number of employees continues to grow at a significant rate. With a growing on-site presence, the on-site social committee events are also ramping up with regular pub quizzes, coffee mornings, monthly ‘getting to know you’ sessions and much more. With this continued growth and innovation we can only wait to see what 2013 has in store for VMware Frimley!
