At VMware Canada, our people put customers at the heart of everything we do. That’s particularly true for Darren Humphries, Director – Solution Engineering, who helps VMware customers in Western Canada set technical direction and develop architecture strategies. An 11-year veteran with VMware Canada, Darren is the winner of our Q1 EPIC2 award in recognition of exemplifying our core values: Execution, Passion, Integrity, Customers and Community.
Darren leads the Western Canada pre-sales solution engineering team, strategizing with organizations on hybrid cloud infrastructure, the software-defined data centre, secure mobile workspace and cloud solutions. Simply put, he is responsible for helping create solutions that solve customer problems while bringing innovation and cost savings. Clearly, Darren is one of our go-to guys!
We recently caught up with Darren to discuss his role, life at VMware Canada, and his views on the current trends in the Canadian IT industry.
Q: Congratulations, Darren! Let’s start with how long you’ve been in your current role and what is it that you like most about your job?
Darren: Thank you! I’ve been in this role for the last 8 years and it has been a wonderful journey. I absolutely enjoy working with great internal teams and spending time with our customers and partners.
Q: What do you think is unique about working at VMware?
Darren: VMware is a company that provides all kinds of opportunities and allows you to innovate. It is okay to try something new – the company is extremely supportive even if it may fail. The most important thing is that you learn from the experience.
Q: What advice would you have for someone trying to get into the industry?
Darren: Keep on top of the industry trends, never stop learning and make sure you have an opinion you can articulate when you are asked.
Q: What big trend do you think is driving the industry right now that our customers and partners need to watch closely?
Darren: The big trend to watch out for is hybrid cloud adoption. We are seeing a growing number of Canadian companies embrace hybrid cloud models to experience the benefits offered by both private and public clouds. For organizations with on-premise infrastructure, the hybrid cloud is an opportunity to optimize operations. Organizations can both reap the benefits of the speed and flexibility of the cloud while not having to throw away existing technology or purchase new infrastructure. But to be successful, there needs to be a strategy to how hybrid cloud is deployed, and that’s where I really enjoy working with our customers and partners to come up with the best solution.
Q: What VMware service are you most excited about today?
Darren: In addition to the strategy our CEO Pat Gelsinger has, I am excited about many of the areas that VMware is involved in – from Software-Defined Data Centre (SDDC), Cloud to Internet-of-Things (IoT). But if I had to choose, it would be our Workspace ONE strategy and the impact it has on user experience – I cannot imagine work-life without it! Today’s mobile and digital workforce need to have the apps and data they need to work across any device, and our Workspace ONE strategy makes that possible with cloud-based management technologies that can easily scale. It’s an exciting time for this technology, and the advances are the way people can work.
