You may have read his recent blog on ‘snowflake’ architectures or heard him talk about cloud adoption on the radio while listening to 680 News in Toronto or 660 News in Calgary. Peter Near has been a member of the VMware Canada team for nearly five years, serving as National Director, Solution Engineering for the past year. We might be biased, but we think Peter leads the best solution engineering team in Canada, while also advising Canadian executives on IT strategies related to cloud and digital transformation.
Peter recently received VMware Canada’s EPIC2 Award for FY2019, which recognizes staff who exemplify our core values: Execution, Passion, Integrity, Customers and Community. We recently sat down with Peter to discuss his role, life at VMware Canada, and his views on what’s driving the Canadian IT industry.
Q: Hi Peter – let’s start with what you like most about your job!
A: There are two top highlights for me – having a real impact on Canadian organizations by helping them to become more competitive on the global stage, and developing the careers of Canadian IT professionals. Seeing one of my customers or a member of my team hit a major growth milestone makes me smile.
Q: What do you think is unique about working at VMware?
A: VMware touches almost every industry in Canada and we work with so many companies across the nation, so our opportunity to have meaningful impact is massive. To be able to make real impact every day, and to do that working at a place that truly lives its values is a unique privilege. VMware truly is the best place to work!
Q: What advice would you have for someone trying to get into the industry?
A: Canadian IT is a tight community and your personal brand lasts a lifetime. Focus on doing right by your customers, keep your personal integrity intact, and leverage what you learn about the market and industry to help advance the overall Canadian IT community. Don’t focus too much on what is in your toolbox on any given day, because that will change frequently but your impact on this community is long-lived.
Q: What big trend do you think is driving the industry right now that customers/partners need to watch closely?
A: Cloud, cloud, and cloud. Every single organization in Canada is now actively moving towards the cloud. We’ve heard “cloud first” for years, but the capability of the cloud in Canada has caught up to the hype, and the big shift is happening now. The SaaS wave was first (led in Canada by Office365), greenfield application development is in progress now, and moving infrastructure to Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is deep into planning stages now. Make sure you’re ready to help customers with these conversations.
Q: What VMware service are you most excited about today?
A: Today I’m most excited about VMware Cloud on AWS and our Canadian launch. The timing couldn’t be better – just as customers are asking us for help with IaaS in the cloud, we have this mature service available now on Canadian soil to make that move easy. There is nothing else like it in the market, and customers are genuinely shocked at how easy it is to go all-in on IaaS in the cloud without having to re-architect everything. It’s awesome!
