VMware Expands Commitment to Mobile with Acquisition of AirWatch

Today is an exciting day in VMware’s End-User Computing journey. I am very pleased to announce that VMware has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire AirWatch, the leading enterprise mobile management and security provider.  VMware’s vision for end-user computing has been to create a secure virtual workspace that allows end-users to work at the speed of life – so that as they move from desktop, to laptop, to tablet, to phone, to car – their apps, their content, their devices come to life seamlessly – anywhere, anyplace, anytime.  This vision has driven our continued commitment to driving the next generation of the desktop through our Horizon Suite and drove us to acquire Desktone last October to give us a leading Desktop-as-a-Service offering. With today’s news, we take a giant step forward in executing on this vision!

The acquisition of AirWatch extends VMware’s proposition from data-center to device, and strongly positions us for the Mobile-Cloud era.  After the closing of the acquisition, the combination of AirWatch and VMware will make us an instant leader in enterprise mobile management and security, one of the fastest growing and most strategic markets to businesses today.

As we look around the industry, mobile is global – and everyone’s lives, from the top floor to the shop floor, are being transformed by mobile computing.  The world needs a robust enterprise mobility platform for the post-PC world of heterogeneous devices – be it iOS, Android or Windows – and now that is VMware!

I’d like to share more details with you on why this news is so exciting for VMware, for AirWatch, and for our customers.

VMware Sweeps Virtualization Review’s Reader’s Choice Awards and Ultimate Buyer’s Guide

We love end-to-end solutions. We work with many of our partners to help customers achieve a simplified, more efficient, flexible, cost-effective, service-oriented IT environment with products from across the range of VMware offerings. So we couldn’t have been more excited (and honored!) to learn that VMware topped nine different categories in this year’s 2014 Virtualization Review Reader’s Choice Awards and Ultimate Buyer’s Guide. The awards strive to identify “who’s better and who’s best among the growing list of cloud and virtualization companies and products.” As Virtualization Review’s Editor-in-Chief Michael Domingo puts it, “VMware had a busy year innovation-wise, and it shows in this year’s results.”

In the end-user computing category, three VMware products were chosen over the competition as Reader’s Choice Winners in the “Application Virtualization,” “Desktop Virtualization and VDI,” and “Mobile Virtualization and BYOD” categories. VMware EUC solutions dominated the end-user computing category with wins and it’s a testament to our continued commitment to technology innovation and ongoing customer engagement. The categories and winning products for EUC include:

To really drive the awards home for VMware, Virtualization Review named us Reader’s Choice Award Winners in several other product categories, showcasing the breadth, depth, quality and innovation VMware is known for. Products were featured from various VMware product groups including Cloud Infrastructure, Cloud Management, Networking and Security, and Storage and Availability. The categories and winning products include:

The competition was fierce, and we can’t agree more with Virtualization Review’s Michael Domingo: “It’s a testament to a vibrant market that continues to generate innovations, improvements and evolutions in technology that are helping enterprises make data more accessible, mobile, cost-effective and secure.” Thanks to everyone who voted. We’re looking forward to an even more innovative 2014!

Introducing VMware Ready Devices on Verizon Wireless

Today I’m very excited to announce the immediate availability of two VMware Ready devices – LG Intuition and Razr M by Motorola – on Verizon Wireless.  These devices are now equipped with VMware’s virtualization technology required to run our dual personal solution, VMware Horizon Mobile.  This is an important milestone for VMware as we deliver on our end-user computing vision of managing users, not devices.  We will continue to work closely with Verizon Wireless to enable a broad set of new and existing devices to be VMware Ready. You might be asking yourself what is a VMware Ready device?  Well, in this blog I will provide a quick overview of Horizon Mobile and VMware Ready program.

VMware Horizon Mobile Overview

Perhaps even more profound than the BYOD trend is the change in how employees use their devices.  Irrespective of who actually buys or owns the device, the corporation or the user, most employees tend to download personal apps onto these devices – Facebook, Angry Birds, Temple Run, etc. coexist with work email/PIM.  It is fair to assume then that most devices will have both personal and corporate content (apps, data and services).
