Did You Know? Microsoft SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2008 Are Available on vCloud Hybrid Service!

Cementing itself as one of the most versatile hybrid cloud platforms on the market, supporting over 5,274 certified applications, VMware now supports Microsoft SQL Server 2012 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 on a monthly subscription basis for vCloud Hybrid Service customers. Running on vSphere, the vCloud Hybrid Service supports more operating systems than any other cloud computing platform in the market.

With the addition of Microsoft SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2008, VMware is adding support for two of the most popular database platforms to the vCloud Hybrid Service. The hybrid cloud enables customers who are running SQL Server on premise to easily extend their data center into the cloud, because SQL Server can run in the VMware hybrid cloud without any code changes.

The vCloud Hybrid Service also provides enterprise-grade security and manageability to support important Microsoft SQL Server workloads.

Alternatively, Microsoft SQL Server customers who are part of Microsoft’s License Mobility for Software Assurance Program can utilize unused Microsoft licenses on the vCloud Hybrid Service, or can move an existing SQL server workload to the cloud.  VMware has written a white paper to help you Bring Your Own Microsoft License to the vCloud Hybrid Service.

Either way, choosing the vCloud Hybrid Service as a cloud platform reduces the risks and speeds the cloud transition for Microsoft SQL Server customers.

Common use cases for customers to bring SQL Server to the vCloud Hybrid Service include:

  • Test and dev for faster provisioning, more predictable costs and rapid scaling.
  • High-availability/disaster recovery
  • Backup and restore of on premise assets
  • Public facing web or mobile applications that interact with on-premise systems
  • Content distribution applications
  • Data collaboration applications.

VMware offers both the Standard and the Web Editions of SQL Server.  Prices start at $95 per month per 2 vCPUs.
