VMware IaaS infrastructure clouds are built upon solid vSphere infrastructures. Those infrastructures are only solid if they are designed properly. Improperly designed vSphere infrastructures can result in unreliable and poorly performing cloud infrastructures (and no one wants that). Whether you are using vCloud Director today, or not, proper vSphere design is imperative.
Fortunately, VCDX and author of Mastering vSphere, Scott Lowe has just released a new option for learning vSphere design – Designing VMware Infrastructures video training course from TrainSignal. This 6 hour course is delivered in both an Internet streaming version as well as an offline DVD, which offers laptop and portable media player versions. The course is made for vSphere admins or consultants who want to increase their design knowledge, cloud architects, or those pursuing the VMware VCAP-DCD certification.
I watched the course myself as part of the review process and learned a lot. There were two areas that made the course stand out. First, when Scott shared pieces of his vSphere design, created for his VCDX defense. Second, I enjoyed when Scott used a scenario with the WiredBrainCoffee.com company to illustrate for us how to design a VMware vSphere infrastructure, step by step.
Here's a full lesson from the course:
For those interested in achieving the recently released VCAP-DCD on vSphere 5, you should know that a VCP5 is required but no other training is required by VMware to take the exam.
Besides Scott's new vSphere design training, Scott has also published (along with others) a vSphere Design book (that he is currently updating to match the features in. vSphere 5).
Alternatively, VMware Education offers a classroom-based vSphere design.
