Vice President & General Manager, Cloud Services EMEA

Following the announcement at VMworld Europe back in October 2013, today I am proud to announce the launch of VMware vCloud® Hybrid Service™ (vCHS) in Europe, with our first service based in the UK.

This marks the beginning of a wider rollout of VMware vCHS across key European locations through 2014 and beyond, extending our service from existing US datacenters.  And the beginning of an exciting new journey for us here at VMware in Europe.

We’ve heard a very clear message from our customers in Europe.  And the strategy announced today is aimed at supporting those 1000’s of organizations that have VMware based internal clouds, who want to transition to using an extension of that environment in a public cloud.  A true hybrid cloud strategy delivers the security, governance and management customers have come to expect of the private cloud, with the agility, speed and economics of public cloud.

By becoming the first to provide our customers with this new option, I believe there are two things that make VMware’s approach stand apart from early cloud ventures:

First, our customers want to be able to seamlessly extend their private clouds into the public cloud using the platform they know and trust. Yet 81 percent of customers recognize the need to make public cloud as easy to manage and control as their own infrastructure#Using the same roles, responsibilities, knowledge and experience, as currently exist in the private cloud, will make transitioning to the public cloud a natural evolution, rather than a painful revolution.

Second, we recognize the need to help our customers with their local privacy and sovereignty requirements, by offering them choice in where workloads and data are hosted.  For example, a recent survey showed that 86 percent of our UK customers recognize the need to keep business critical data within UK borders. So VMware is overcoming this barrier by developing a globally scaled cloud platform, delivered locally and under local legal terms and conditions.

VMware is ready to support customers on this transition to capitalize on the growing cloud trend, while supporting IT with the rigor and management it needs. There are 5,700 applications already available, ready to run without changes on vCHS and likewise support for 90 operating systems – more than any other provider. We’ve had customers already show us their intent, with a very successful Beta program highlighting a variety of use cases:

  • Using hybrid cloud to migrate packaged applications already running in internal clouds
  • Using hybrid cloud to run pre-production test and development cycles, before deploying on or off premise
  • Extending private cloud to public cloud to satisfy disaster recovery requirements

Biomni is one of these customers; hear what Angus Gregory, Biomni’s CEO, had to say about the experience: http://youtu.be/HsdFFahb4NQ

We look forward to supporting our customers’ next steps on the hybrid cloud journey!
