Review the Full Agenda

Before You Go

You will be empowered to take advantage of the best educational opportunity to expand your knowledge, maximize your investments, and gain a greater competitive edge with cloud and virtualization solutions all while having some fun in the process.

Solution Exchange

The Solutions Exchange is undoubtedly the most action-packed part of VMworld.

The industry’s most forward-thinking IT solution providers convene in the expo space every year to showcase their innovative products and meet their customers and partners. Be sure to schedule your time and visit these sponsors. This is an amazing opportunity to explore and learn about new cloud-era innovations. Don’t just get your badge scanned – get a live demo, ask the difficult questions and get a datasheet or card so you can follow-up after the conference.

Booths range from the small pods to entire palazzos on the show floor. This year, over 300 exhibitors will be there for you to visit. The VMware booth will include technology demos, and expert bar, and theater presentations.

Don’t forget to bring business cards or contact apps, as well as your backpack or swag bag to collect materials and goodies.

Hands-On Labs

Each year the VMworld Hands-On Labs (HOLs) are a huge attraction at VMworld. This year will be no different as VMware continues to innovate and provide a user experience greater than any other in the industry. The HOLs are designed around typical customer use case and business scenarios. This allows conference attendees to have a hands-on experience exercising workflows that relate to real-world scenarios.

Take on the HOLs to get more in-depth knowledge of these innovative technologies that you want to learn more about.  If you need help with a lab, flag down a lab captain to speak with a product expert. We have over 225 Product Experts under one roof to answer your product questions.

Why attend Hands-on Labs during VMworld?

#1. Be the first to take the latest Hands-on Labs.  Our labs are released every year at VMworld US. The labs feature the latest products, features and solutions from VMware and partners.

#2. Interact with over 225 VMware product experts under one roof. Our experts are ready to provide guidance, share best practices when using our products.  This is probably the only place in the universe where you can get access to this many product experts under one roof.

#3. Interact with your peers, and colleagues. This year we are featuring “Focus Areas” where like-minded individuals can take the same lab and share their experiences in a very casual and interactive manner.

VMworld Hands-on Labs Cloud Credits.

Attendees taking Hands-on Labs during VMworld will get points for taking labs. This is a great way to gain an upper edge on your peers and have fun taking Hands-on Labs.

New Hands-on Lab Content for 2014

We are extremely proud of our new Hands-on Lab content for 2014. We have taken the best from last year and improved upon it based on your feedback and comments. This year we are showcasing labs like Airwatch that will have outbound access to your device. This means you will be able to get an up close and personal look at how to manage mobile devices using Airwatch Management platform.

NSX Partner Solutions – we are featuring labs show casing integration with leading partners such as Palo Alto Networks, Juniper and Symantec. The NSX was the number one lab around the world last year and destined to continue to be in the top ranking this year. Be the first to test out our new labs.

The world around storage – We have great new modules dedicated to storage and storage performance monitoring. This is a great opportunity to get ahead on Virtual SAN technology.

We have a great deal of new content so be sure to check out our Hands-on Labs catalog on theVMworld.com Site. Plus, check out this sneak peek of the what you will see at the Hands-On Lab room:

Partner Created Hands-on Labs

This year we are featuring some top solutions created by our Partners who we incorporated as part of our development teams. We are very product of our solutions and hope you have time to take our Partner Hands-on Labs.

Please take a look at our complete Hands-on Lab catalog for VMworld 2014.

Introducing The Expert Led Workshops

The Expert Led Workshops provide an intimate experience with you and our product experts. The workshops are small by design and geared for you to take a lab, learn best practices and tips from the product Experts. You will follow along the Hands-on Lab and more important hear from the Experts on the tips and tricks when using our products. The Expert Led Workshops are scheduled through the Schedule Builder – they have filled up fast.

Self Paced Hands-on Labs

The Hands-on Lab we have known over the years. We are offering Traditional seating with desktops sponsored by Dell. These include the Dell Z90 and D90 Thin Clients and the beautiful 24” Monitors. We are also offering the ability for you to bring your own laptop to take a lab. If you do decide to take the lab using your laptop you will need the latest versions of Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer (10+) Please be sure to check the Lab hours – You do not need to register to take a Self Paced Hands-on Lab – just show up.

Product Focus Areas

As we mentioned above these areas are dedicated for you to come in with your like-minded individuals, take a lab and share experiences. We will have Product Experts in the area to help with any questions if they come up.

The Hot Spot is Back

We are planning on having 1 Hot Spot in Moscone West for users that would like to take a Lab in between sessions and breaks. We will have the area supported with product experts who can help you with product questions.

Breakout Sessions

Choose from more than 300 Breakout Sessions covering topics such as the hybrid cloud, enabling IT as a service and delivering end-user freedom while maintaining IT control.  Visit the VMworld 2014 Content Catalog today and explore the session topics, abstracts and presenters across a range of session tracks.

The Schedule Builder allows you to register for the sessions you want to attend.  In order to get into a session you must register.  You will not be able to book multiple sessions as the same time. Registering doesn’t mean that you must attend but keep in mind that if you register and don’t attend someone else is missing the session.

There will be many must see sessions. If you review the content catalog and look at the presenters you will notice that presenters are experts – engineers, solution and consulting architects as well as product managers. Many of the names may be familiar to you and the community. Be sure to sign up, as these will fill up very quickly.

The good news is, that if it is a popular session it may be repeated on another day/time. Popular sessions will repeat at least once during the conference. Remember to check the schedule daily – the VMworld event staff will put out daily updates that show any changes, additions, and deletions to the schedule.

Be careful about scheduling sessions back-to-back. Sessions are spread out across the VMworld Campus and there is a chance that the next breakout session is a not near the last. If you’re registered for a session you should have a seat available but if you are late you might not be able to get in.

You’ll have the opportunity to meet with VMware engineers, architects, consultants and product managers, industry-leading analysts, bloggers, authors, peers and technology partners. Connect individually or in groups throughout the conference in Breakout Sessions, Hands-on Labs, Discussion Groups, the Hang Space, VMworld Party, Social Media.

It might be hard to read name tags so watch for the color scheme on the badge or lanyard. Each attendee will have a distinct color code that will identify their role. Pins are often used on the lanyards to identify special groups such as VMUG Leaders, vExperts and more. Lunch is also a great opportunity to meet new people.

Take advantage of every moment, from discussions with session & theater speakers — to demos with booth staff — to hallway conversations with other attendees. Don’t be afraid to tap the shoulder of that person standing or sitting next to you and introduce yourself.  Use VMword social media conversations to amplify your networking with the extended VMworld community.

And of course, follow @VMwareTAM on Twitter and read our blog for daily recaps.

VMworld 2013 Barcelona wrap-up and thank you note

First of all: what an amazing event! We hope you enjoyed VMworld 2013 in Barcelona as much as we did!

Our TAM customer community started VMworld 2013 with the exclusive and very popular TAM Day. This year, we were overwhelmed by the interest in TAM Day! More than 200 people attended and we are already planning for even more capacity for next year! Most popular were the NSX overview session by Paul Fazzone (VMware Vice President of Product Management for NSX) and our highly interactive Birds of a Feather lunch with Subject Matter Experts for SDDC, Big Data, VSAN, Automation, Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery, Data Protection, vCloud Hybrid Services, VMware Global Support Services or CloudOps – to name just a few.

Thank you for taking this extra day to join our both technical and business breakout sessions, discussions and also the get-together event in the evening. TAM Day is your day! We will go through the feedback forms and incorporate that for our 2014 planning!

TAM Customer Central was a huge success as well. We moved into a new area in comparison to the 2012 event to allow even more people in for these deep-dive discussions. And still we had to bring in additional chairs to fit all interested customers for some of the sessions. This time, TAM Customer Central also had an area with sofas to just sit down, relax your feet and catch up with other people in the room.

Overall, we’d like to thank you very much for participating in these exclusive meetings with our experts, Product Managers, Engineers, etc. We hope the discussions and roadmap information provided added even more value to your VMworld experience.

If you want to share feedback between now and VMworld 2014 with us, please feel free to reach out to your TAM or provide it directly in this form.

Before we all meet again in Barcelona next year, make sure to follow us on our Blog, Twitter, Facebook and Google+!

“It’s All About the Applications!” TAM Day 2013 Executive Keynote at VMworld US

Exciting times are here for those of us with an absolute passion for infrastructure – continued advancements in the virtualization of x86 workloads, software-defined storage and networking, coupled with management, automation, security and compliance.

But let’s not lose sight of the purpose of the infrastructure within this wave of innovation – it’s there to run applications!

Paul Strong, our CTO of Global Field for VMware, kicked off TAM Day 2013 in San Francisco with an Executive Keynote and addressed the concepts behind the software-defined data center and the relationships with the application workloads.

Running applications can be challenging.  Each application has to be purchased or written, architected, integrated and tested. If it’s critical to the business or the mission, the application will be throughly and repeatedly tested. Then it needs to be deployed, managed, secured and monitored.  Backup, recovery and business continuity plans are also needed.  And if you are really dedicated, you will practice actual failover between sites rather than the academic paper-based exercises.

Oh no, you’re not done just yet. Applications need people with those skills to operationally maintain the application lifecycle and processes – including patching and upgrading.

And that’s just a single application. How many applications are in a typical enterprise? Some have hundreds, some thousands!  It is this large number of applications and their diversity that drives complexity in IT, and thus cost.  And it is diversity that has made automated management so hard. Diversity in terms of applications and in terms of infrastructure – and all change frequently.

Minimizing the number of patterns is what allows cloud providers to achieve economies of scale, or what we could think of as economies of simplicity.  Minimize the number of patterns deployed and in so doing you are able to massively automate the management of applications.  Automation improves reliability, reduces cost and enables agility.

While enterprises are unable to reduce the number of applications managed down to single digits they can certainly source some of their applications as SaaS. But what about the rest?  Well, it turns out that if we make all of the applications look the same from a management perspective, then we can get most, if not all, of the benefits of simplicity, and automation.

And it is this principle that lies at the heart of a software-defined data center.

The software-defined data center is about two verbs – virtualize and automate. Virtualization separates applications from the physical infrastructure, placing them in simple containers (virtual machines or virtual data centers).  With the applications in containers, you can isolate them from each other.  You can move them from low capacity to high capacity, and back. You can move them from a breaking machine to a working machine.  You can move them from a machine that needs maintenance to one that does not.   You can move or replicate them across data centers for business continuity.  You can move out to the cloud to burst or test. Separating applications from the infrastructure allows you to do all of this, and virtualization is the means of achieving this. Placing your applications in these containers is the key to simplification.

For the reader that prefer awesome video recaps, check out the VMworldTV Day One Recap with Eric Sloof. Always terrific and fun!

A year after introducing the software-defined data center architecture, our pioneering IT framework has gained wide acceptance across global business giants and start-ups alike. And during the Day One General Session we unveiled the next-generation solutions to further enable SDDC. These four products that enable customers to virtualize infrastructure and deliver IT-as-a-Service; providing efficiency, agility and control for building and operating private, hybrid and public clouds include:

  • VMware vCloud® Hybrid Service™ to seamlessly extend your existing data center to the cloud while leveraging the same tools and processes you use today.
  • VMware NSX™ Network Virtualization Platform to Deliver New Network Operational Model that Improves Agility and Advances Data Center Economics
  • VMware Virtual SAN™ Introduces New Approach to Storage, Delivering Simple, Self-Tuning Storage for Virtual Machines
  • New Versions of VMware vCloud® Suite and VMware vSphere® with Operations Management™ Increase Management and Automation Capabilities to Strengthen Foundation of a Software-Defined Data Center Architecture
  • VMware vSphere® 5.5 Extends Support for Business-Critical Applications and New Workloads

VMware vCloud Hybrid Service – vCloud Hybrid Service is now generally available in the US (available globally in 2014) and allows you to seamlessly extend your existing data center to the cloud while leveraging the same tools and processes you use today.

VMware NSX  – Like server virtualization, VMware’s approach to network virtualization enables you to treat your physical network as a pool of transport capacity that can be consumed and repurposed on-demand. Virtual networks are programmatically created, provisioned and managed, utilizing the underlying physical network for simple IP connectivity. VMware NSX brings together the best of Nicira NVP™ and VMware vCloud Network and Security™ into one unified platform, delivering the entire networking and security model (Layer 2 – Layer 7) in software. In addition, the VMware NSX virtual networks support existing applications, unchanged, on any physical network infrastructure.

Similar to other distributed VMware vSphere services, VMware NSX is built upon a groundbreaking distributed architecture where the network services are integrated with the hypervisor kernel. This enables network services to scale out in concert with the hypervisor to meet the application’s needs. Since VMware NSX delivers Layer 2 – Layer 7 services entirely via software, all that you need to do to grow your infrastructure is add more server nodes. This architecture enables VMware NSX to handle as much as 1 TB per second of network traffic per cluster of 32 hosts.

VMware NSX is an extensible platform that leverages a distributed service framework for easy insertion of partner services. VMware NSX technology partners are organized into service categories that follow the network virtualization lifecycle and include network service gateways to bridge physical and virtual environments; network security platforms that provide multi-service network security including firewall and threat prevention; application delivery services including load balancing, application delivery and WAN optimization controllers; and security services including anti-virus, IDS/IPS and vulnerability management. Today, more than 20 partners announced support or showed demonstrations of VMware NSX at VMworld.

  • VMware NSX will be available in Q4 2013.
  • Learn more about the VMware NSX network virtualization platform.

VMware Virtual SAN – Similar to VMware NSX, VMware Virtual SAN is built on a unique distributed architecture that will enable storage services to scale out linearly with the needs of the application. Through the seamless integration of VMware Virtual SAN with VMware vSphere, we have redefined the role of the hypervisor to deliver virtualized compute and storage services in an elastic, flexible fashion. The distributed architecture enables VMware Virtual SAN to deliver I/O performance comparable to mid-range storage arrays while leveraging the economics of direct-attached storage.

VMware Virtual SAN offers a policy-driven control plane that automates storage consumption and management via virtual machine-centric policies. Relying on server-side solid state disks (SSDs) and hard disk drives (HDDs), VMware Virtual SAN delivers significantly lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and test/development environments, among other use cases. You can start small and grow storage performance and capacity by adding servers as needed.

  • VMware Virtual SAN will be available via a free public beta program in Q3 2013.
  • Learn more about VMware Virtual SAN.

VMware vCloud Suite 5.5 – We introduced VMware vCloud Suite 5.5, which features new and enhanced product functionality as well as broad product integrations. The VMware vCloud Suite will enable customers to build and operate a vSphere-based private cloud using the software-defined data center architecture, providing virtualized infrastructure services with built-in intelligence to automate on-demand provisioning, placement, configuration and control of applications based on policies. The comprehensive, integrated private cloud infrastructure solution simplifies your IT operations while also delivering the best SLAs for all applications.

The VMware vCloud Suite is built on the foundation of VMware vSphere, the world’s leading virtualization platform. With VMware vSphere 5.5, we continue to evolve vSphere to provide you with the best platform for all of your applications including new workloads through new and enhanced compute, availability, storage and backup capabilities. To improve the availability of business-critical applications, VMware vSphere 5.5 introduces vSphere App HA to detect and recover from application or operating system failure. New VMware vSphere Flash Read Cache virtualizes server-side flash to lower application latency dramatically. To further improve the response time of latency-sensitive applications, VMware vSphere 5.5 introduces a low-latency sensitivity feature. VMware vSphere 5.5 enables configurations two times the previous physical CPU, memory and NUMA node limits.

With VMware vSphere Big Data Extensions, you can now run Apache Hadoop and Big Data workloads on VMware vSphere 5.5, alongside other applications, to achieve greater resource utilization, reliability and agility. In addition, VMware vSphere 5.5 now supports next-generation Intel® Xeon® processor E5 v2 and Intel® Atom™ Processor C2000.

VMware vCloud Automation Center™ and VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite™ capabilities have been added to all VMware vCloud Suite 5.5 editions. VMware vCloud Automation Center provides the agility you need with the control you require through a flexible solution for automating the delivery of IT applications and services. VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite has integrated, proactive performance, capacity and configuration management capabilities for dynamic cloud environments. VMware vCloud Suite 5.5 also features new releases of VMware vCloud Connector, VMware vCloud Director®, VMware vCloud Networking and Security, and VMware vCenter™ Site Recovery Manager™.

VMware vSphere with Operations Management 5.5 – Originally introduced in February 2013, VMware vSphere with Operations Management combines the industry-leading vSphere virtualization platform with insight to workload capacity and health. VMware vSphere with Operations Management will enable customers to optimize their environment through integrated capacity planning while proactively monitoring and maintaining overall performance of their environment. VMware vSphere with Operations Management 5.5 will take advantage of VMware vSphere 5.5 to provide customers with the best platform for all their applications and workloads.

  • Learn more about VMware vSphere with Operations Management 5.5.

New Services and Certifications – We also announced a host of new certifications and professional services to help you outline the strategy and technology roadmap to define and implement a software-defined data center architecture:

  • VMware Certified Associate (VCA) available for cloud (VCA-Cloud), data center virtualization (VCA-DCV), and network virtualization (VCA-NV), these certifications offer a new credential to validate entry-level skills before progressing on to the VMware Certified Professional (VCP) certifications.
  • New Technology Consulting Services focus on building an extensible platform for a software-defined data center architecture. These services address the key design and deployment elements that deliver the efficiency, agility, control and choice enabled by VMware products and technologies.
  • Strategic Consulting Services, through VMware Accelerate Advisory Services, that help organizations quantify the value of a software-defined data center model within their IT environments, mapping out an actionable strategy to deliver tangible business value.
