Today I did a update from VM 5.5.3 to 6.0 for LINUX and everything went fine. After the installation I got the message: Please enter your 20 character serial number. I had a valid serial number before, why do I need a new serial number? My old serial number is not working anymore.

Hi Lars,
You will need to upgrade to Workstation 6 to get a Workstation 6.0 serial key. Workstation 6.0 is a major release and requires a different serial key from Workstation 5.x.
You can find out more about how to upgrade your Workstation license here:

Hi Jane,
I had the same problem, I have got my upgrade license, however, I still get the same error.
I un-installed vmware v5.5 then did an upgrade to version 6, got my new license number, but still get the error.

OK, I found the way round if it's still locked.
Go to the folder where you have your virtial machine, look for the file with extension .lck, rename it to .old or delete it. That's it. your locked workstation is now unlocked.

Just downloaded and installed v6. My existing serial number doesn't work. Isn't this upgrade included in the VMTN subscription?
Posted by: Stefan Johansson | May 14, 2007 at 11:45 AM
I thought it was included as part of the subscription too and emailed that question to vmware...haven't heard anything back yet. Anyone else?
Posted by: Jeff Gersbach | May 15, 2007 at 09:30 AM
We also have a VMTN subscription and thought upgrade to Workstation 6 was included too.
Any news on this yet ?

I am also getting the error "Could not open virtual machine: xxxxxxx.vmx This virtual machine appears to be in Use."
All I did was upgrade to WS6 and I am trying to open my VM's from version 5.5

v.6 installation will not complete. Error message states that I must remove earlier version. I installed (and removed) the trial version.
Now,earlier version does not appear on the installed program list, but I still get the same installation message.

Why some 5.5 versions can be upgraded to version 6 for free(because baught in 2007?) and for others (like mine baught in 2006) I have to pay an extra fee ?
I think all 5.5 versions are the same and sell at the same price. So, upgrading to version 6 must be the same for everybody!

I seems that some V5 versions could be upgraded for free. Howcome ? I bought a V5 license just over three months ago and can't upgrade... Well, C'est la vie. and good luck to you too.

If it's possible to install/run VMWare Workstation 6.0 and VMWare Virtual Machine Console on the same host?
This was working on Workstation 3.x, but not on 5.5.

My vmware workstation 6 beta expired, it worked fine on fedora 5 but why doesn't the player with it have a long term password. Now do I have to reinstall the player separately?.
