Poor network performance or high network latency on Windows vms

We recently updated one of our popular performance related KB articles, and let’s face it, we’ve never had a complaint from a customer about a vm performing too quickly!

This KB article tells us that there are three possible causes for this issue-

  1. Power plan
  2. High CPU ready time (also referred as “%RDY” or “%RDY time”)
  3. Receive Side Scaling (RSS)

What I saw in the KB under the Power plan heading of particular interest was the the line stating:

“On Windows 2008 and 2008 R2, the power plan is set to Balanced by default. Microsoft has observed and confirmed that changing the power plan from Balanced to High Performance may increase overall performance”.

The default is not going to be the best performing. The same is true for Windows 2012 Server as far as I know. Something to check. The KB is definitely worth a read.
