VMware Workstation version 9 was released today. In anticipation of lots and lots of you wanting to get your hands on it and kick the tires, we have created a KB titled:
VMware Workstation 9.x sales, licensing, and compatibility FAQs (2032851)
The article answers such questions as:
- Where can I download VMware Workstation 9.x?
- Where is the license key that I just purchased?
- I have VMware Workstation 6.x or 7.x. Am I eligible to purchase an upgrade to VMware Workstation 9?

I got a VMWare Workstation 8 license when I got my VCP 5. Can I upgrade it to 9 without cost ?
If you received your VMware Workstation 8 between August 1st and September 30th, 2012 you may be eligible for a complimentary electronic upgrade. See this: http://www.vmware.com/go/ws9tgp
I contacted VMware when I received my VCP 4 and workstation 7 within the free upgrade date for 8. I was told I was not eligible for the upgrade. It is possible things HAVE changed with 9, but I doubt it. I am in the same boat for I also obtained my VCP 5 and workstation 8 within the free upgrade date.
Having less than a one month window for a free upgrade really sucks.
We had just bought 4 copies of the Workstation 8 upgrade (two from 6 and two from 7) on July 20.
Now they wanted another $119 * 4 to upgrade these.
It may have been another complaint on the blog that I filed yesterday but some weasel from VMware had the gall to call me and basically tell me that I was out of luck. That made me even madder.
I think the idiot was going to offer me a 50% off coupon on the upgrade but my distributor had already managed to get one of those for me.
I think the inmates must be running the asylum at VMware these days.
I’ve been a loyal customer for 10 years but this is rapidly driving me to consider other solutions.
I concur. I am a freelancer and bought VMware Workstation 8 end of May and a couple of months later they release a new major version and the upgrade is pretty expensive then.

I want to evaluate Windows Server 2012 over the vmware workstation.
Does it soupport Windows Server 2012.
The 2012 server is supported. It’s on the list of OS when creating a new VM. There is also a Hyper-V option, which enables the test of Hyper-V. (not supported for production).
Is this a push to make more cash? Workstation 8 has hardly been out for a year, *IF* it has been a year. If you want to push customers away by wanting to sell them upgrades every year I’d say you’re doing a wonderful job vmware.
I agree with Freaky… having spent quite a lot of money on Workstation 8, to be prompted to buy an upgrade is pushing it. I have now disabled the software update checks, I just hope VM don’t release a security update for WS8 that I end up missing because of it.
I am upset that this trivial update is a full major release requiring a paid purchase. It’s only been 10 months since the last major release!
I just got off the phone with support for VMware Workstation. The [Indian] man agreed that the new features only warrant a new version number of 8.1 or 8.5, but he commented that he doesn’t make the rules. His supervisor, and that guy’s manager wouldn’t help me upgraded my 4 month old licenses for less than $100.
It’s the most insignificant upgrade in Workstation history (view the release notes), but is the highest cost upgrade ever ($119). Historically, VMware has released paid upgrades every two years. It’s been less than a year since 8.0 was released.
VERY greedy!!! I will seriously consider Microsoft’s virtualization from now one.
I’ve just installed VMware Workstation 9 and all works great – I have connected to an image through my web browser on my iPad after configuring WSX – it connects but the resolution is way off – can I set it to auto set the correct resolution for my iPad?
Thanks in advance
I have been buying VMware products for my private home use since 1999. I just purchased VMWW 8.x last September – less than a year and now 9.0 comes out and they want more money – 119.00 ? WOW, really?
Personally – I now have to evaluate my use of this product vs. the cost – considering the free alternatives that are available – Hyper-V, Virtual Box, KVM etc…
I do not want to do this, but in this economy, where every penny counts – I simply cannot justify spending another 119 dollars US in less than a year for what is seemingly a minor upgrade in a major number release.
Very sad…..I was a loyal customer, but this is not right.
What a disgrace VMware. I will not be updating for this minimal feature set. I presume there will be another equally trivial $100+ update within 10 months at which point I will be ineligible for “discounted” upgrades and will have to pay full cost of a new license.
To really add to the insult – as an Australian I am forced to pay $US180 for the same digital download that everyone else gets. That’s 50% more for downloading to Australia rather than US.
p.s. Your three week “complimentary” period is a joke.
Thank you everyone for your feedback on this. I will be passing this info on to those who need to see it.
