VMware View 4.6 Released

VMware View 4.6 just went out the door and we think customers will be happy with this release because it delivers more than 160 bug fixes.  In addition, the following new enhancements / Features are included:

  • PCoIP Security Server
  • USB device compatibility enhancements
  • Enhance keyboard mapping
  • New and improved timeout settings for SSO users
  • Important bug fixes that continue to improve the performance and robustness of the product
  • Support for Win 7 SP1 RC (experimental)

Major New Feature >> PCoIP Secure Gateway (PSG)

Security servers now include a PCoIP Secure Gateway component. The PCoIP Secure Gateway connection offers the following advantages:

  • The only remote desktop traffic that can enter the corporate data center is traffic on behalf of a strongly authenticated user.
  • Users can access only the desktop resources that they are authorized to access.
  • No VPN is required, as long as PCoIP is not blocked by any networking component.
  • Security servers with PCoIP support run on Windows Server 2008 R2 and take full advantage of the 64-bit architecture.

VMware Fusion Licensing and Upgrades

Ganesh Shetty today highlights some important things to know when upgrading your VMware Fusion license to a newer version.

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind when licensing your copy of VMware Fusion.

  1. VMware Fusion 3.x works with a 25 character license key.
  2. VMware Fusion 1.x/2.x works with 20 character license keys.
  3. License keys for VMware Fusion 1.x can be used with VMware Fusion 2.x and vice versa. However, license keys for VMware Fusion 1.x/2.x will not work with VMware Fusion 3.x.

Additionally, if you plan to upgrade from Fusion 1.x/2.x to Fusion 3.x, it will be a paid upgrade.  It is recommended that you purchase the upgraded license key first and then upgrade the binaries.  Please visit our online store to purchase an upgrade from VMware Fusion 1.x/2.x to VMware Fusion 3.x.

Evaluating VMware Workstation and Fusion

Ganesh Shetty brings us another great tip today for those wishing to evaluate our consumer desktop products.

Downloading and evaluating VMware Workstation and Fusion can be more difficult than it sounds. From time to time we hear about customer frustration with the process. Fortunately, we can show you how it’s done in 3 simple steps!

Evaluating VMware Workstation and Fusion is pretty much the same so I’ll be using the example of VMware Fusion here.

1. Go to https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/?p=vmware-fusion31&lp=1 to evaluate Fusion and https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/?p=vmware-workstation&lp=1 to evaluate Workstation.

2. Enter your Login Credentials.

Note: Please ensure that you have created a VMware Account prior to logging in. If you need assistance in creating an account, you can refer the VMware Knowledge Base Article Creating and updating a VMware Account (1021642)

3. Complete the VMware Fusion/Workstation Evaluation Registration Form and Click Register

And Voila! Not only do you get access to the license keys and the download binaries but also a Getting Started guide.

vCenter Lab Manager Product Update

We want to provide you with an important update about the vCenter Lab Manager product.  As customers continue to expand the use of virtualization both inside the datacenter and outside the firewall, we are focusing on delivering infrastructure solutions that can support these expanded scalability and security requirements.  As a result of this focus, we have decided to discontinue additional major releases of vCenter Lab Manager.  Lab Manager 4 will continue to be supported in line with our General Support Policy through May 1st, 2013.

As VMware continues to invest in our customers' journey to cloud computing, we are focusing on delivering secure multi-tenant enterprise hybrid clouds with VMware vCloud Director.  vCloud Director is a new software solution that provides the scalability and security necessary to deliver catalog-based self-service provisioning across different workload types, across multiple enterprise tenants, and across both private and public deployment models.

As a customer of Lab Manager, we would like to offer you a special opportunity to leverage the scale and security of vCloud Director.  Customers who are active on SnS may exchange their existing licenses of Lab Manager to licenses of vCloud Director at no additional cost.  This exchange program is entirely optional and may be exercised anytime during Lab Manager’s General Support period.  This provides you the freedom and flexibility to decide whether and when to implement a secure enterprise hybrid cloud.
