VMworld Europe 2013: Leading the Industry in Support for the Mobile Workforce

Today, VMware is making two very exciting announcements at VMworld Barcelona that reinforces our commitment to advancing end-user computing for the industry and for our customers.

First, we are introducing new, innovative product offerings and capabilities across the VMware End-User Computing portfolio to broaden support for the mobile workforce. Second, we are announcing that VMware has acquired Desktone, a pioneer and leader in desktop-as-a-service (DaaS) as part of its commitment and effort to advancing that segment of the market and end-user computing as a whole.

This is a very exciting time for the End-User Computing Group at VMware and in the end, it will be our customers who will ultimately benefit from the advancements we make today and the vision we have for the industry for tomorrow.

Socialcast Mobile Apps For a Modern Workforce

Today we are pleased to announce a new release of the Socialcast mobile app for iOS. It is the first of many new-and-improved mobile apps we plan to release in the coming months as part of our commitment to making the Socialcast mobile experience the best in the industry.

We continue to focus on delivering products that meet the needs of a modern workforce. Recent technology trends, including the shift away from the desktop to mobile devices, are part of what is helping to shape our vision, however, there is a human side too. In the not-too-distant future, companies will need a very different kind of employee to drive profitable growth. In a recent study conducted by CEB, global executives say they will need a 20% improvement in productivity to meet their business goals.

Those productivity gains will come from employees equipped to exploit the changing nature of work in a global, hyper-competitive business environment. CEB identifies four major changes in the nature of work that will impact how it is structured and managed, and what it will take to succeed. The successful employee will be mobile, increasingly knowledge-driven, highly adaptable to change, and deeply collaborative with a broad range of individuals, both within and outside the company.

Meeting the needs of this modern information worker was at the forefront of our spring re-design of Socialcast, and continues to inspire our ongoing improvements for iOS and other popular mobile platforms.

The new Socialcast mobile app for iOS is built from the ground up to keep today’s workforce in synch with everything they need — colleagues, conversations, files, and projects. It’s faster and packed with community features such as Thanks, our employee recognition feature; auto-complete; Like; and universal search. It has been completely redesigned for greater ease of use, and optimized for iPhone and iPad devices.

Socialcast Powers The Extended Enterprise

The modern workplace is a complex ecosystem of employees, vendors, partners, contractors and customers. As in nature, there is a distinct role for everyone, and in order for each member and the sum of the parts to flourish, a symbiotic relationship must exist amongst all parties.

In simpler terms, a company doesn’t exist in a vacuum – it is part of, and relies upon, many others in order to succeed.

Today, Socialcast is announcing several new features that employ this concept:external contributors, enhanced user roles, and organizational charts. Until today, our platform was only available for the employees inside an organization, and there were two distinct roles that these employees could have (a user or an administrator). Now, we are introducing features that permit secure, role-based collaboration amongst employees and non-employees inside a Socialcast community, complete with the appropriate context around each user’s permissions, reporting structure, and role within the communication ecosystem.
