Why I’m Excited About End-User Computing (VMworld 2013)

By Sanjay Poonen, EVP and GM, End-User Computing, VMware

This is my second week at VMware, and I for one am very excited about the future of the company. This is a company that has had a huge emphasis placed on INNOVATION. Engineers are proud of the great products they have pioneered that have practically made VMware a household name in the data center and the go to market team is proud of the success they’ve created with customers and the channel.

The recent recognition of VMware as the third most innovative company in the world by Forbes in their 2013 ranking of top 100 firms is a testament to the fact that VMware is not only the company that made industry history with its virtualization technology 15 years ago, but it’s also the company that is continuing to lead the industry with its vision and innovation, as the client-server era transitions to a new mobile-cloud era.

I see a huge opportunity for VMware to extend the VMware brand from the data center to the desktop and help customers transition from traditional PCs to virtual desktops. We’re also living in a new mobile-cloud era where mobile is the new desktop and social becomes a core component of the way we work in the enterprise and some customers struggle to extend or adapt their infrastructure to support enterprise mobility.

At VMware the key unifying package is the Horizon Suite. Momentum is continuing since the Horizon Suite launch just six short months ago and our announcement at VMworld shows that we continue to advance our product strategy with new capabilities and partnerships that make supporting workforce mobility easier for IT.

I’m excited about the news we announced today around our plans to offer Horizon View desktop-as-a-service, new VMware Ready smartphones, new mobile partners and simplified Enterprise Mobile Management for IT with Horizon Workspace 1.5. But, I’m even more excited about the great customer feedback we’re getting.

Products need to be developed with customers in mind and we keep that in mind with every release. We’re excited by the support we are receiving from actual customers who have purchased our products.

Below are three customers from different industries using Horizon Suite products to address their end-user computing needs. Nothing is more important than customers who will vouch for your product, support your approach and believe in your long-term vision and the quotes below are a showcase of the growing support for Horizon Suite. Customers believe in our EUC vision and product strategy, and our news today will carry that momentum forward.

So if you’re at VMworld this week, enjoy yourself, make new friends, stop by the VMware booth for some EUC product demos, and meet the team. I’ll be at the show, taking everything in myself so if you see me, please introduce yourself. I’m always interested to hear from our existing or prospective customers.

Horizon Mirage

“Tasks such as PC backup and quick restore, helpdesk support, hardware and operating system migration, application updates and others, can be very time consuming for IT organizations and for end users. Horizon Mirage allows us to centrally manage and protect thousands of employee PCs and laptops around the world, many of which operate off site. As a result, we have considerably reduced administrative overhead and improved users experience and productivity.”

-Golan Remi, vice president for IT Americas Region & Global Managed Services, Amdocs

Horizon Workspace

“Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) selected Horizon Workspace as a collaborative tool to help us attain our college goals of providing a fully accessible (anyplace, anytime, anywhere, any device) digital learning environment for our 40,000 students. NWTC will use all Horizon Workspace as a catalyst for technology to create easy access to the learning environment.”

-Linda Hartford, CIO, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College

Horizon View

“The ability to provide clinicians with an always-on and in-context desktop experience from any device is a crucial element in our transformation of healthcare. The significant time and cost savings over traditional PCs is an added bonus. We chose Horizon View not only because of VMware’s unparalleled expertise in virtualization technology and trusted reputation but because they honestly wanted to become partners with HackensackUMC to make a difference in healthcare.”

-Jeremy A. Marut, Director of Enterprise Architecture at Hackensack University Medical Center
