VDI 2.0 Vision Delivered

At VMworld 2013 in San Francisco, we started talking about the vision of VDI 2.0, the next generation VDI architecture comprising the confluence of a variety of new technologies from VMware and our partners, as well as VMware’s formal entrance into the DaaS or Desktop as a Service market. Here at VMworld EMEA , we’re going to talk about concrete product releases to actually back up this vision and how we are drastically accelerating our customer’s journey to VDI 2.0 . Windows as a Cloud Service Let’s start with today’s announcement that VMware has acquired Desktone . The explosion of mobile devices, mobile and web applications, and increased interest in the cloud is driving businesses to reevaluate their desktop...

Innovations in the VMware Cloud Management Portfolio

VMworld Europe is this week and there’s a lot of news coming from VMware, so I want to take a step back and highlight some of the innovation included in the new Cloud Management offerings we announced in Barcelona. The Cloud Management team is releasing updated products across the portfolio – with new versions of vCenter Operations, vCloud Automation Center, IT Business Management, and Log Insight. A lot of time and energy was spent bringing these products to market and I’ll cover some of the new features and capabilities in this blog. Innovation comes in many different forms and flavors. One might be a new analytics algorithm that improves the analysis of data. Another form may be a set of integrations that...

Direct Connect with vCloud Hybrid Service

VMworld Europe kicks off this week, and there are a lot of strong announcements coming from VMware – across our entire portfolio. On the Hybrid Cloud side, VMware today announced it plans to bring VMware vCloud Hybrid Service to the UK with the first data center location in Slough, and will offer a private beta of vCloud Hybrid Service in the UK in Q4, with general availability planned in Q1 2014. You can read more about our news here . In this blog however, I’ll focus on a key capability within vCloud Hybrid Service that was introduced at VMworld 2013 in San Francisco. In my last post , I discussed how customers are able to manage their virtual machines using the...

Introducing VMware NSX – The Platform for Network Virtualization

The VMware NSX platform delivers the entire networking and security model in software, decoupled from traditional networking hardware, representing a transformative leap forward in data center networking architecture. Overview:  Today’s data center is largely virtualized from a compute perspective, and has unleashed unprecedented benefits of agility, efficiency and capex/opex savings. What is less known is that virtual network access ports have exceeded physical network access ports in number, and this trend is accelerating. In fact, today, 40% of vAdmins manage virtual networks. Beyond virtual switching, the time is ripe to virtualize the rest of the networking stack, and accelerate our customer’s journey to the software-defined data center . At VMware, we’ve put together an all-star team, the Networking & Security Business Unit (NSBU),...

Virtualized High Performance Computing (HPC) at VMworld 2013

August 19, 2013

It’s been a busy few months on the HPC front here at VMware. I’ve been spending increasing amounts of time answering questions from our field people and talking with customers about the benefits of using virtualization and cloud technologies for HPC workloads. The two hottest application areas are clearly Life Sciences and Electronic Design Automation (EDA), with Financial Services as a third area where serious interest is starting to ramp. Customers in these sectors are actively evaluating or deploying HPC solutions based on VMware technology. Some of this work will be presented at VMworld 2013 August 25-29 in San Francisco. Here are the talks that will be of special interest to organizations whose job mixes include the technical, scientific or engineering...

VMware at the OpenStack Summit

October 17, 2012
By

By Guest Blogger: Martin Casado It has been a very busy week at the OpenStack Summit. Unfortunately, I am not there but Quantum is. What is Quantum? Quantum is the networking-as-a-service capability and most talked about aspect to OpenStack’s Folsom release. Quantum has become a game-changer when it comes to enabling advanced networking in OpenStack environments, and the Nicira team at VMware has been leading the charge both in open source Quantum development and in deploying Quantum in production OpenStack environments.
