VMware’s Strategy for iOS 7 and Industry Implications

July 31, 2013
By

Apple announced iOS 7 last month at WWDC and we think this release will have a profound impact in the enterprise market with categories collapsing and vendors disappearing off the map. But getting more specific, as a result of this announcement, VMware is embarking on a new iOS strategy and I’d like to share more details on this shift in strategy as well as my perspective on how this release will impact the industry. Quick review of relevant iOS 7 features: At a high level, Apple extended its Mobile Device Management (MDM) APIs to also manage applications so in addition to turning knobs to control device characteristics, IT can now control application capabilities as well. The most relevant iOS 7 features that will...

Introducing VMware Ready Devices on Verizon Wireless

Today I’m very excited to announce the immediate availability of two VMware Ready devices – LG Intuition and Razr M by Motorola – on Verizon Wireless. These devices are now equipped with VMware’s virtualization technology required to run our dual persona solution, VMware Horizon Mobile. This is an important milestone for VMware as we deliver on our end-user computing vision of managing users, not devices. We will continue to work closely with Verizon Wireless to enable a broad set of new and existing devices to be VMware Ready. You might be asking yourself what is a VMware Ready device? Well, in this blog I will provide a quick overview of Horizon Mobile and VMware Ready program. VMware Horizon Mobile...

Introducing VMware Horizon Mail

I’m excited to announce the immediate availability of VMware Horizon Mail that can be downloaded from Google Play . VMware Horizon Mail is a native Android collaboration application that allows you to access your corporate email, calendar, contacts, tasks and files from any Android device. The previous incarnation of this application was called VMware Zimbra for Android and made available as a fling . Based on customer feedback, we decided to productize and release the app via Google Play. This will also be the default email/PIM client for our VMware Horizon Mobile initiative. Horizon Mail supports any Microsoft ActiveSync compliant email server and also supports the VMware Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS). With ZCS as the backend, Horizon Mail offers several additional ZCS-only...

Mobile in 2013

As we wrap up 2012 and edge ever closer to 2013, I would like to share some trends I’m seeing in the mobile space and also offer up two inter-connected predictions for next year which are based on what I’m observing with mobile applications. From talking to dozens of customers, it is obvious that seismic changes are brewing. Perhaps the biggest of them all is how employees are using their smartphones and tablets, and the driving force behind this is the application ecosystem. The app ecosystem, which was largely unknown in the early Blackberry days, is flourishing on iOS and Android so much so that over a million applications are now available for your mobile devices. According to analyst, users are downloading an average...
