VMware Cork is located in picturesque Ballincollig just eight kilometres west of Cork city, on the banks of the river Lee. Our office campus is situated in Barrack Square, a historic and beautiful old military barracks that was originally established in 1810, which has been home to VMware since 2007.
The campus consists of three office buildings, Parnell House where we took up residence in 2007, closely followed by Kavanagh House in 2008 and our most recent expansion was into Behan House in 2011.
VMware Cork has experienced remarkable growth over the years both in terms of employees and key business functions. Employee number one for VMware Cork back in 2005 was John Dolan, now Vice President, Worldwide Global Technical Support, who originally moved from EMC to establish VMware’s GSS function here. Over the next couple of years numbers grew to approximately 60 staff, however this soared to 280 in 2008, 344 in 2009, 472 in 2010 and 620 in 2011. Even now, we are continuing the trend of expansion and have just reached 700 personnel on site in July 2012.
As well as GSS, Cork is also home to departments for Finance, Sales, IT, Order Management, Deal Desk, Legal, HR, Facilities and Staffing. And in 2011 VMware welcomed Mozy, the cloud-based data protection provider, to the company and the Cork office.
What makes Cork unique?
VMware Cork is truly a multi-cultural campus with a total of 36 different languages spoken by the staff here including French (55 speakers), German (47 speakers), Spanish, Italian, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Danish, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Slovakian, Czech, Russian, Chinese, Japanese.
The average length of service at the office is between one to three years, but we do have 55 members of staff on campus with five years or more of service. And over the last four years we have seen a 350% numerical growth in headcount.
The meeting rooms in Parnell House are all named after indigenous Irish trees such as Elm, Birch, Ash and Oak. In Kavanagh House they are named after famous Irish writers and poets like Yeats, Wilde and Heaney. And finally in Behan House the monikers are all based on Irish rivers including Lee, Liffey and Boyne.
