Many readers of this blog might suspect that at this time of year campus recruiters are beginning to take a break from being on the road after traveling from career fair to career fair. That may be true at many companies but at VMware, the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, our travels continue. During this time of the recruitment season, our focus shifts a bit. We’re now looking forward to participating in more and more women focused technology events on campuses and at regional and national conferences. For example, over the remaining spring months, our planned visits will take us to UT Austin, GA Tech and Cal Poly to meet with student organizations developed to bring together women in computer science and engineering. We’ll be learning about new ways we can partner with these groups and support efforts to build awareness among members of all the amazing opportunities for women in the technology industry and at VMware specifically. 

 Regionally, we’re excited to attend the Mid-Atlantic SWE in the City conference the end of March at Columbia University in NYC. The goal of this event is to facilitate connections between students, professional SWE members, corporate representatives and faculty members. VMware will be on-hand during a networking reception and the career fair specifically, eager to meet with 300+ talented female engineers who will be attending weekend activities.  If you’re reading this and are planning to travel to NYC, send me a heads-up!  Let’s set up some time to chat.  From a national perspective, just yesterday, Anita Borg Institute leaders visited us at our beautiful Palo Alto campus, to discuss events and programming scheduled throughout the year for our current and future women in technology. The event of most interest to readers is likely the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) of Women in Computing scheduled to take place in Baltimore from October 3 – 6. For those of you who are not familiar with GHC, now is the time to learn more and think about getting involved. This event is a series of conferences designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. Presenters of conference sessions (presentations, workshops, panel discussions, etc.) are leaders in their respective fields, representing industrial, academic and government communities. Attending GHC, offers an incredible opportunity to collaborate and network with other female tech professionals worldwide. It is truly a celebration and experience you will not soon forget. The connections made at this event are guaranteed to span for years to come. VMware will have a booth at the event in October and will also be conducting interviews on-site. You might also consider talking to the department leaders of your current program to find out if there may be opportunities to take advantage of available funds to support your registration and/or travel to Baltimore.

Sr. University Relations Specialist, Alicia Schetter, works to develop and maintain strategic partnerships with students and staff at top universities throughout the U.S. She came to VMware after spending three years with salesforce.com as a University Recruiting Program Manager. Her last position with sfdc included managing the UR strategy and team. Prior to that experience, she spent time in the world of academia as Associate Director of MBA Career Services at UW – Madison and at Miller Brewing Company as a University Recruiting Team member. She feels the most rewarding part of her job is taking on the role of counselor and assisting students in making some of their first (and most important) career decisions.
